SolarEagle- A Solar Spy Aircraft That Can Fly Over Five Years

The following article was published at "Technews" of  anna university,chennai......

The SolarEagle, a solar spy aircraft being built by Boeing, can fly in sky for over five years.

The aircraft would provide intelligence information and remain there at altitudes inspecting over any threats. The aircraft, touring above 60,000 feet altitudes, would look for intelligence information and send it back to the land .

During the testing phase the Solar Eagle aircraft would stay in sky for about 30 days. The plane would consume solar energy during the day time and save the energy to supply power at the night.

The aircraft will come equipped with superior quality propellers, electric motors and a 400-foot large wing especially for maximum solar power consumption.

Commenting on this high-end unmanned spy aircraft Pat O’Neil, Boeing Phantom Works program manager for Vulture II, said, “That’s a daunting task, but Boeing has a highly reliable solar-electric design that will meet the challenge in order to perform persistent communications, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions from altitudes above 60,000 feet.”

The first demonstrator flight is expected to be completed by 2014 and the US military has given $89 million contract for the Solar Eagle to Boeing.
